Recognising Procrastination

We all know people who procrastinate: your child, your colleague, your partner. Procrastination comes in all shapes and sizes but most importantly, every form of procrastination is frustrating. Whether you’re waiting for your living room to be put back to how it was, for a payment to come through or to be taken on a date, no one likes to be let down. But whilst you’re pointing the finger, do the procrastination tendencies lurk in you? Read the following to find out…

1. You’re disorganised
Disorganised people are more likely to be procrastinators. With no schedules or prioritised ‘to-do’ lists, it’s easy to let preference take precedence and the jobs you like least will quickly fall to the back of the line time and time again.

2. You’re feeling frustrated
Procrastination impacts our emotions. Even when done subconsciously, it can leave you feeling frustrated for a lack of productivity. Avoiding a task that you think you won’t like or won’t be able to do will only reinforce those ideas, causing underlying anxiety and even fear. If you’re feeling this way at work or in your personal life, it might be time for an introspective gaze.

3. You never seem to have enough time
If you’re struggling to find time to complete tasks to the best of your ability, it’s likely that you’ve been procrastinating. Very few people are really too busy to accomplish all of their responsibilities and there is always scope for improved productivity. You may have been filling time with menial or mindless tasks and need to prioritise. Either that or there really is too much on your plate, some of which may have to go.

4. You have a lot of self-talk that doesn’t seem to come true…
Procrastinators often lie to themselves to sooth their anxiety or remedy their guilt. If you find yourself thinking, “I’ll feel more like doing that tomorrow,” or, I’ll work better tomorrow, when I’m under more pressure,” you need to stop and address your procrastination tactics! The sweet little nothings that you’re whispering to yourself are nothing more than a pack of lies!
